Playstation continues to bring in revenue for Sony.
Since the third quarter ended on December 31st, 2014, Sony’s Gaming and Network Services branch, which is a part of Playstation brought in a grand total of 531.5 bn Yen which equates to about £2.9bn punds. The Games and Networks Services branch has generated more revenue than any of the other branches currently attached to Sony during the 3rd Quarter.
Due to these amount of sales, it has lead to an increase in sales of about 16.8 % mainly due to the sales of their new flagship console the Playstation 4.
In the third quarter, a total of 6.4m Playstation 4’s were sold. During the same quarter of the year before only 4.5m units were sold. Globaly, Sony has 20.2m units.
Also highly favorable exchange rates in currencies, and a significant raise in the Network Services (Playstation +) have also helped as well.
On the other hand, as one would expect, the older Playstation 3 and Playstation 3 games have seen a decrease in sales which also have had an impact on Sony.
Due to the high sales of the Playstation 4m, the operating income has increased to £153m for the 2014 financial year which comes to an end in March of 2015. But, there was a noticeable write down on the PS Vita and PS TV because they continue to stuggle with their sales.
Sony expects to have a combined total of 17.5m sales for the PS4 and PS 3 in the 2014 financial year. Their 17.5m sales prediction is up from their previous prediction of 17m. Also their prediction of 3.5m sales for the portables of Playstation remains the same. Sony expects to make 450m software related sales, which is up from their previous forcast of 390m sales.
It was a positive quarter for Sony as a whole. Sales increased by 6.5% and their operating income was up by 104%. But Sony still expexts to report a net loss ( their sixth time in seven years) for their current financial year.
